Nelson Stewart
Football Head of Program

Nelson Stewart was named Head of Program for Football at Westminster in 2025, bringing more than 25 years of teaching and coaching experience to the Wildcats. A highly respected leader in high school football, Stewart joined Westminster after 19 successful seasons as Head Coach at his alma mater, Isidore Newman School in New Orleans.

During his tenure at Newman, Stewart compiled a remarkable 162-54 record with state playoff appearances in all 19 seasons. His teams advanced to the state semifinals six times, the quarterfinals six times, and captured seven district championships. Stewart is widely regarded for his ability to mentor and develop talent pipelines—helping student-athletes reach top collegiate programs, including Ivy League schools and Power Four universities. Among the notable players he has coached are NFL star Odell Beckham Jr., Texas quarterback Arch Manning, and Princeton signee Eli Friend.

Stewart’s impact extends beyond competitive success. For 26 years, he taught Lower School physical education at Newman, inspiring young athletes and cultivating a love for the game. His annual summer football camp, drawing more than 100 participants each year, became a cornerstone for player development and community engagement. He has also served as a coach with the nationally recognized Manning Passing Academy, further cementing his reputation as a teacher of the game.

A 1995 graduate of Isidore Newman, Stewart played under legendary coach Tony Reginelli, was a team captain as a senior, and was teammates with Peyton Manning. He went on to play at Tulane University, where he was a member of the offensive line during the Green Wave’s historic 1998 undefeated season under head coach Tommy Bowden.

Stewart and his wife, Emily, an art teacher, have three children: Taylor, John Nelson, and Caroline.
